The export value of coconut products from India has increased to Rs.6448 crore in between 2014-18 which was only at Rs.3975 crore in between 2004-14 as per data from the agricultural ministry.
The ministry also told that a jump in exports is expected as the products becoming competitively priced. Also, the government is providing 5% incentive to promote the coconut products’ export under the Foreign Trade Policy for years 2015-20.
The ministry stated that “Income earned from export of coconut products was Rs 3,975 crore during 2004-14, which increased to Rs 6,448 crore during 2014-18” in a statement on Monday. India has started exporting coconut oil to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka with the boost from the center. Earlier these countries were selling coconut oil to India. Another achievement that the ministry stated was that the country is shipping large amounts of dry coconut to the USA and European countries.
The data from the ministry tells that the country’s annual coconut yield is 2437.80 crore and the productivity is 11,616 coconuts per hectare. The coconut crop is cultivated in 20.98 lakh hectare of land and adds Rs 34,100 crore to the GDP. This industry gives livelihood to more than one crore people.
