To start an import export business in India, it is mandatory to get an IEC code or Import Export License code. The process of getting the IEC code is similar whether you want to start importing or exporting from any country.

DGFT has simplified the process a few months ago and made it simpler. The forms can be filled online and the documents can be uploaded and sent along with the form to apply for IEC.

Following is the step by step process to apply for an import-export license in the country:

  1. Get Scans of the mandatory documents

To get the IEC c ode four mandatory documents have to be submitted. It is important to get the documents and get them scanned before filling the application form.

The documents required are:

  • PAN card
  • Passport size photograph
  • One Identity Proof like Voter ID/ Aaadhar Card/ Passport/ Driving License
  • Cancelled cheque
  1. Preparing the Digital Signature

Class 2 Digital Signature is mandatory to apply for an IEC code online which costs about one thousand rupees for a period of two years.

  1. Account Creation

Open dgft.gov.in which is the official site of DGFT where you will be applying for the IEC code. Here create an account with the help of your email id and mobile number.

  1. Fill in the form

Fill the ANF form carefully as the IEC applications get rejected 3-4 times on an average. If possible take an expert help to cross-check the filled application so as to avoid any rejections.

  1. Document upload

The required documents have to be uploaded before submitting the form. Check that they have been uploaded in the correct format and are in the correct size limit.

  1. Payment of fees

A fees of Rs.500/- has to be paid online after submitting the documents and filling in the applications form. Each time the application form has to be submitted, this fees has to be paid. To avoid rejections, it is better to take professional guidance before submitting the application.

  1. Sign using the digital signature

Use the DSC to sign and submit the filled application form along with the uploaded documents to send it to DGFT for processing.

  1. Tracking of Application

Keep tracking the application form to know the status and if the application has been approved or rejected.
